In Loving Memory of Selena Quintanilla Perez

Selena "Amor Prohibido"

Life sometimes surprises us with events that tear our hearts apart. Such was the event on this day about this same time 10 years ago. Selena Quintanilla Perez, the #1 female latino star in the United States and Mexico, was murdered by her associate Yolanda Saldivar. The tragic event paralized the fans who supported this Tejana diva. Selena was a determined young woman who was destined to succeed. She started singing when she was 3 and at age 9 she sang in the band "Selena y Los Dinos," where her brother AB Quintanilla played the bass and her sister Suzette played the drums. Here's a very brief timeline of Selena's life:

1971 April 16, 1971 Selena is born in Lake Jackson, Texas
1980 Selena & her father AB Quintanilla form the band “Selena y Los Dinos” & they make their first recording in 1984
1992 Selena marries Chris Perez, a guitarist in her band
1993 Selena holds her first Mexican press conference in Monterrey.
Selena starts her own clothing line & opens Selena, Etc. boutique
1994 Selena receives a Double Platinum award for “Selena Live” & a Quadruple Platinum award for “Amor Prohibido” which reached #1 on the Billboard Latin chart
1994 Selena album “Selena Live” wins a grammy for best Mexican-American album
1995 Selena performs before a record-breaking crowd of more than 61,000 fans at the Houston Astrodome
1995 Selena records crossover album “Dreaming of You”
1995 Selena is murdered by her associate Yolanda Saldivar on Friday, March 31st

The movie "Selena" was awesome. Jennifer Lopez starred in the movie as Selena. She did a great job portraying Selena's personality, as well as showing off her body features with Selena's apparel from her clothing line (Selena,Etc.), she even mimicked her sexy dance moves. I highly recommend watching the movie if you haven't watched it.

Selena touched the hearts of millions & she will always be remembered. She is the role model for Latino artists who crossover in their music. Selena brought the Tex Mex sound to the United States and some of her hits are still #1. In her own unique way she mixed her Hispanic culture with the American culture. That's why she's a role model for me. She was very determined to reach her goals and make her dreams come true. Although I don't have the voice to be a great Latin singer like her, I am determined to be successful, and I will never forget my Mexican roots! Selena is my inspiration...
